Beat the heat and flee up Little Cottonwood Canyon this summer. Alta is one of the best-kept summer getaway secrets for Utah locals. And this summer there are a ton of events and activities to try out during those long weekends.
1. The Hills are Alive with Mountain Music
Who doesn’t love a good outdoor concert in the summertime? This summer Alta Ski Area has free music every Saturday on the deck of the Albion Grill. Brought to you by Alta Community Enrichment and Alta Ski Area, this unique series will be a small intimate concert series unlike anything else in the Wasatch.
The lineup and variety of musicians welcome all types of musical stylings. There will be everything from funk to folk found on the mountain. Check out the full line up of musicians here.
2. Alta Community Enrichment Events
Get involved with the local Alta community! Ever wanted to learn how to season & smoke real BBQ style? Or what about increasing your herbal knowledge? Alta Community Enrichment (ACE) has a plethora of weekly actives for you to try. There’s even weekly Monday night yoga outside on the Goldminer’s patio.
ACE is a local nonprofit that creates opportunities in arts, culture and education for the enhancement and well-being of the Little Cottonwood Canyon community.

3. Fuel Up with Alta Java
Since you’ll most likely be hiking on the Sunnyside ski area you’ll have to stop at Alta Java to fuel up before exploring all those wildflowers. Or on your way down from the classic Cercet lake hike be sure to stop by the window located on the bottom level of the Albion Grill to say hi to Suzie and order a local favorite lemonade, a homemade biscotti, or fresh made local pastries.
4. Parade of Raptors & Nature Walk
Looking for something fun and educational while your kids are on summer vacation? Join Friends of Alta and Hawkwatch International every other Friday in the summer as they host a Parade of Raptors program.
The Parade of Raptors program features a presentation of real, live birds of prey, and you’ll learn everything from species information, individual stories on how the birds came into captivity, and conservation activities.
5. The Main Event: Wasatch Wildflower Festival
What do mountain bluebells, Indian paintbrush and monument all have in common? All three of these vivid flowers can be found at Alta. Want to learn more about the wildflowers of the Wasatch, come join the fun on Saturday July 28 9:00am – 1:00pm.
The Wasatch Wildflower Festival mission is to provide a fun and encouraging environment for the community to learn about the variety of wildflowers that can be found in the Wasatch mountains! And it’s also meant to educate on the protection of the watershed.
Join the fun! Difficulty ratings of “beginner, intermediate, or advanced” are based on trail difficulty or length, not level of wildflower knowledge.
